"believe me it's important" when christina turns back, room gets darker... why check original files a) cause - an iris adjustment during shooting most likely, although i don't remember being by the camera at this point. b) solution - using keyframes on the color corrector and slight increase in highlight value over the three or so frames that the scene darkens c) also changed old color corrector to bring correct excess luma and copied color corrector to previous shot (same shot) to match

process – foley

all

starting at 3:30 a, we have 2 hours before the birds start singing at 5:30 a. daytime should be for foley inventory, development of instruments and performance practice.

process – foley

feet

i performed christina in bare feet, check the result, might be better with a very silky sock, something that gets the subtlety of her light tread without the scrape of my rough skin.

process – foley

feet

the walking drum consists of four blocks of wood with slightly rounded bottoms. on top of that is medium thickness masonite and carpet. the slight rounding of the blocks gives them a dull creak as opposed to sharp creak. the blocks get the masonite off the ground to form a sound chamber that the mic can be pointed into. this increases the volume of the effect by a factor of 2 or 3 in contrast to having the carpet on the floor. increased volume means that ambient sound is less of an issue.

00:00:00:00

act 5.0

process – foley

performance

05/18/2008 – so now we have a pretty comprehensive inventory for act 1 and 2, the next step is to audition the actors. for each category, we define the different instruments we'll use. For example, feet are – joe with hard sole shoes, christina barefoot, christina with biker boots, gerry with heavy boots. rustle/clothing are joe's dress jacket, christina's sparkle gown, christina's cotton dress, gerry's heavy coat, bra, pink shirt and g's bed (landing) g's blanket. doors/creak are c's cabin door, g's inner cabin door, g's outer screen door, g's closet, g's bathroom door. so we look at each category and audition instruments, do test recordings and gather them together for performance. that's today's project along with finishing the inventory for act 3.

act 1.5

voice-over

intermission, sequence of broadcasters

we've been learning how much prep work can be done by setting up cues for the sounds. footsteps have clear landing points, but doesn't everything have a certain performance emphasis? what's the basic structure of what we want to hear? the story!

more prep - test surfaces – yoga matte, dry floor, masonite, carpet, cloth, cardboard

comprehensive inventory, strategy, schedule of recording evening and perhaps daytimes.

05/16 don't forget to experiment with sounds using SFX machine – feet, cloths, etc. softening or fuzzing

to weld a cut together, use foley across the transition

act 2.0

j his audio has funny warble as does ambiance for boat – 30 fps? yep, convert!

creaky and squeaky is a theme, things are old and dry, there's no oil or grease to spare

05/14/2008 my workflow approach is to inventory everything here and not make cues in soundtrack unless i need to analyze rehearse the performance. this inventory list is more versatile than the visual cues in soundtrack, and we should only be maintaining one “inventory” not two.

05/14/2008 foley can be used to emphasize lines, a little sound effect mixed into a line can pop it – adding irony, or sarcasm, or whatever. sound is music is language

rescue – shortwave trans = computer, shortwave handheld = phone. voting machine/mechanical

05/14/2008 2 if we think about foley, the sounds the incidental sounds that characters make can say something more about them – the way their shoes scuff, clothing swishes. we can materialize the character and tell the story even further. this goes beyond the idea of just having “real sounding” foley. there's the sound presence and then the story elaboration

05/16 we can also base future characters on – the energy of their animal signs and their enagram – “the wisdom of the enagram” is the title. these are fun guides to how a character will act react in a given situation.

must have fades in adr – room tone is murder

when recording subtle sounds, turning up the record volume is dangerous for two reasons – 1) the environment must be super silent (sound coming out of headphones is an issue) and the loud room tone in the recorded audio has to be faded up and down, very noticable.
